Every Interview Loop Needs an Async Round

You have five engineers who can conduct interviews. Maybe eight if you stretch it. Each one spends an hour on the interview itself, plus 30 minutes on prep and debrief. Interviewer bandwidth is the real bottleneck

Your interviewers might not have caught up

Here is the part that is harder to talk about. The skills that matter in 2026 are not the skills most interviewers know how to evaluate.

53% of tech jobs now require AI or ML skills, up from 29% a year earlier (Robert Half, 2026). AI judgment, process discipline, validation habits. These are the new table stakes. But many of your best interviewers learned their craft evaluating candidates on algorithms, system design patterns, and whiteboard communication. They are good at what they do. They are just evaluating for a job that is changing faster than their rubrics.

An async screener with a structured evaluation framework standardizes what you are looking for before any human time is spent. It does not replace your interviewers. It gives them a baseline so they can focus on the harder questions: system thinking, collaboration, judgment under ambiguity, whether this person will be safe hands on your team.

The alternative is that each interviewer evaluates for slightly different things, calibrated to their own experience, and you aggregate signal across interviews that were measuring different variables. That is not a process. That is vibes.

Fundamentals should not require a senior engineer

Does this candidate decompose problems before prompting an AI, or do they paste the whole requirement in and hope for the best? Do they write tests? Do they validate AI output against edge cases or accept it blind? Do they know when the model is helping and when it is off course?

These are not subtle, judgment-heavy questions that require a senior staff engineer to evaluate. They are fundamentals. Table stakes. AI-assisted code produces 1.7x more major issues when these fundamentals are absent (Second Talent, 2025). You need to check for them, but you do not need to burn your best people's afternoons discovering that a candidate cannot do the basics.

An async screen that captures the full working process answers these questions before an interviewer ever opens a calendar invite. The prompts, the iterations, the validation decisions, the moments where the candidate chose to write code themselves instead of asking the model again. All visible. All scored. When the interviewer does sit down for the live round, they already know the candidate can code and can work with AI responsibly. The live round becomes about depth: architecture decisions, tradeoff reasoning, collaboration style, how someone handles ambiguity when the model gives them four plausible answers and none are quite right.

Async complements live. It does not replace it.

We sometimes hear teams frame this as either-or. "We do live interviews, so we do not need async." Or: "Our take-home replaces the first interview round." Both framings miss the point.

The async round handles the filter. The live round handles the depth. One feeds the other. Skip the async round and you push the filtering work onto your most expensive resource, your senior engineers. Skip the live round and you lose the human judgment that no scorecard can fully capture.
